About the Word

BINGO is both a noun and an exclamation. As a noun it is the game of chance where players mark off numbers on a card as they are called, and the first to complete a line or pattern shouts the word to win. The game was sold in the United States under the name “beano” before “bingo” took over around 1930. As an exclamation, it means “exactly” or “got it”, the moment something falls into place.

Why It Was Tricky

Most players spotted the ING quickly, and that’s exactly where the trap was. Years of BRING, BEING and THING teach you that ING belongs at the end of a word, so plenty of guesses pushed those letters into positions 3 to 5. In BINGO, ING sits in the middle and an O finishes the word, which is a much less common shape for a five-letter answer.

  1. CRANE found only an N, in the wrong spot, and ruled out the most common consonants.
  2. POINT added O and I. Three yellows meant the letters were right but every spot was wrong.
  3. LINGO put I, N, G and O in place, leaving only the first letter.
  4. BINGO solved it. DINGO and JINGO were the other options at this point.

Similar Words to Know

LINGO, DINGO, JINGO and BINGO all share the same -INGO ending, so once you have INGO locked in, test several first letters at once instead of one at a time. BRING and BEING are the near-misses that catch people who assume ING always comes last.

Wordle Tips for Tomorrow

Don’t assume where a letter group belongs

Familiar chunks like ING, TCH or OU can turn up in unexpected positions. If a chunk keeps coming back yellow, try sliding the whole group one space left or right.

Use a scouting guess for word families

When four letters are fixed and several first letters would work, play one word that tests two or three of those first letters together. It’s quicker than trying them one by one.
