How to Use the Wordle Solver

  1. Add your green letters. Type each green letter into the box for the spot where it turned green.
  2. Add your yellow letters. Type each yellow letter under the spot where it turned yellow. If a letter was yellow in two different spots, type it in both boxes. One box can hold several letters.
  3. Add your grey letters. Type every grey letter in one go, in any order.
  4. Pick your next move. If only a few words are left, choose from the list. If many are left, play the suggested “best next guess” to narrow things down faster.

Worked Example

C
R
A
N
E
T
R
I
P
S

After these two guesses you would enter R and I as greens in spots 2 and 3, T as yellow under spot 1, S as yellow under spot 5, and CANEP as grey. The solver narrows thousands of words down to a handful, including WRIST and GRIST, and suggests a guess that tells them apart.

What Makes This Solver Different

It knows which words have already been answers

Our word list includes every past Wordle answer, from #0 CIGAR in 2021 to today. Each one is tagged with the puzzle number it appeared in. Wordle started reusing some old answers in 2026, so used words stay in the list, and the “top unused pick” shows the best word that hasn’t been an answer yet. Tick “Hide words already used” if you’d rather leave them out completely.

It tells you the best next guess, not just the matches

When lots of words still fit, guessing one of them at random is often slow. The solver looks at which letters are spread across the remaining words and suggests the guess that splits them up the most. This is the same idea strong players use when they play a “scouting” word.

It handles double letters properly

If a letter turned green or yellow in one spot and grey in another, the answer contains that letter exactly as many times as it showed up coloured. The solver applies that rule automatically, which is where many simple word finders go wrong. Our guide to double letters in Wordle explains why.

Is Using a Wordle Solver Cheating?

That’s up to you. Plenty of players use a solver after they finish, to see what they could have guessed, or when they are stuck on their fifth try and want to save a streak. If you would rather keep things honest, try our daily Wordle hints first. They give you a nudge without handing over a full list of words.

Tips for Solving Wordle Faster

  • Start with common letters. Openers such as CRANE, SLATE and STARE test the letters that show up most. See the best Wordle starting words.
  • Spend guess two on new letters. A second word with five untested letters usually tells you more than one that fits your first clues.
  • Watch for letter groups. Patterns like -IGHT, -OUND and GR- appear in many words. Our guide to common letter patterns in English covers the main ones.
  • Know when to switch on Hard Mode. Read how Wordle Hard Mode works before you try it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Wordle solver work?

It checks every word in its list against your green, yellow and grey letters and keeps only the words that fit all of them. It then ranks what’s left and suggests the guess that should narrow things down the most.

How many words does the solver know?

Around 2,204 five-letter words, including every past Wordle answer. The list focuses on everyday words, because Wordle answers are common English words rather than rare or technical ones.

What do green, yellow and grey mean in Wordle?

Green means the letter is in the word and in the right spot. Yellow means it’s in the word but in a different spot. Grey means it isn’t in the word at all.

Can Wordle answers repeat?

Yes. Since early 2026, some past answers have been used again, which is why the solver shows used words instead of hiding them by default.

Does the solver work for Hard Mode?

Yes. Every word the solver lists fits all of your clues, so each one is a legal Hard Mode guess. The “best next guess” may use letters you have already ruled out, so in Hard Mode pick from the matching words instead.
