Today’s Extra Hints

  • Words by first letter: A (2), C (47), E (2), L (5), N (4), O (2), V (4).
  • Longest answer: 9 letters.
  • Perfect pangram (uses all seven letters exactly once): No.

Today is a great day for food words. Look for a Caribbean leafy stew (CALLALOO), an Irish potato and cabbage dish (COLCANNON), the plant behind a popular cooking oil (CANOLA) and the bean behind chocolate (CACAO). Other less common accepted words include NACELLE (the housing for an aircraft engine), ENLACE (to wrap or entwine) and CLOACA. Double letters matter too: CANCAN, COCOON and CALLA all reuse a letter, so don’t stop at one C. Both pangrams are science and church words, so think about chemistry bonds and a meeting that chooses a pope.

How to Play the NYT Spelling Bee

The Spelling Bee gives you seven letters arranged in a honeycomb. Your goal is to make as many words as you can. Every word must:

  • be at least four letters long,
  • include the centre letter,
  • use only the seven letters in the honeycomb, and you can repeat letters as often as you like.

Proper nouns, hyphenated words and offensive words aren’t accepted. Every puzzle has at least one pangram, a word that uses all seven letters. A new puzzle is published every day at 3:00 AM US Eastern time.

Spelling Bee Tips From Our Editor

Work through the grid one row at a time

Pick a starting letter from the hint grid and try every length before moving on. It’s much easier than hunting for words at random.

Add common endings

Once you have a base word, check whether -ED, -ING, -ER, -Y or -LY works with today’s letters. One root can often give you three or four answers.

Look for the pangram early

The pangram is worth at least 14 points, so it’s worth a few minutes at the start. Try combining the less common letters first, since they narrow down the options.

Double your letters

Letters can repeat, so words like GIGGLE or BELLIED are fair game. Many players miss these because the honeycomb only shows each letter once.
