About the Word
SLIDE works as both a verb and a noun. As a verb it means to move smoothly over a surface while staying in contact with it, the way a puck slides across ice. As a noun it covers the playground ride, a single screen in a presentation, a glass plate used under a microscope and a gradual fall, as in a slide in prices. The word goes back to Old English slidan, and it has kept the same basic meaning for more than a thousand years.
Why It Was Tricky
SLIDE uses common letters, so most players find several of them quickly. The trouble is how many words share its shape. SLICE, SLIME, SNIDE, GLIDE, ELIDE and ASIDE all differ by one or two letters, and once you have _LI_E or S_IDE in place it’s easy to burn a couple of guesses working through them one at a time.
Example Solve in 3 Guesses
- CRANE locked E at the end and ruled out C, R, A and N.
- SOLID put S in place and showed L, I and D were all in the word but in the wrong spots. With O gone, S L I D E was the only order that fit.
- SLIDE solved it in three.
Similar Words to Know
SLICE, SLIME, GLIDE, SNIDE, ELIDE and ASIDE all share most of today’s letters. When you have four letters fixed and several words still fit, play a scouting word that tests the differing letters (C, M, G and N here) in one go.

Wordle Tips for Tomorrow
Use a scouting word for big word families
If four letters are locked and three or more words still fit, a guess that tests their differing letters together will usually save you a turn.
Let your second guess move letters around
When guess one gives you yellows, place them in new spots in guess two, as SOLID did today. It confirms letters and positions at the same time.
