About the Word

GRIST is a noun for grain that has been brought to a mill to be ground into flour. The word goes back to Old English and is linked to the verb “grind”. Today it turns up most often in the phrase “grist to the mill” (or “grist for the mill” in American English), which describes anything that can be put to good use, the way a miller uses every sack of grain.

Why It Was Tricky

One vowel is always hard work, and GRIST also starts and ends with consonant blends (GR and ST). The bigger trap is the family of lookalikes. Once _RIST is in place, WRIST is the word most people try first, and it’s far more common than GRIST. Players who guessed BRISK or CRISP earlier also had to work out that the S sits fourth, not third.

  1. CRANE locked R in second place and ruled out A, N and E, so the only vowel left to test was I, O or U.
  2. TRIPS confirmed I in third place and showed T and S were in the word but in the wrong spots.
  3. WRIST put S and T at the end. Only the first letter was left.
  4. GRIST solved it.

Similar Words to Know

WRIST, GRIST and TWIST share most of their letters, and CRISP, BRISK and FRISK are close cousins with the S in a different place. FIRST uses almost the same letters in a new order, which is why it sometimes comes up as a guess too.

Wordle Tips for Tomorrow

Count your vowels after two guesses

If two vowel-heavy guesses only turn up one vowel, stop hunting for a second. Plenty of answers have just one, and the remaining guesses are better spent on consonants.

Learn the common opening blends

GR, BR, CR, TR, ST and SP start a large share of five-letter words. When your second letter is a green R or T, test two or three of these blends in a single guess.
